Abstract
The Lower Tertiary, consisting of conglomerates of igneous rocks, sands, shales, and limestones, forms an anticline with some structural complications in the surroundings of Tol Viejo. The limestones are between 10 and 60 meters thick. The calcium (CaO) content is always higher than 50%. There are lateral facies changes within the limestones that give rise to a quartz sandstone with calcareous cement and abundant fossil fragments, mainly mollusk s and foraminifera. These variations have a local character, at least within the region studied. The extent of the limestones and the CaO content, together with the exploitation and transport facilities, make them suitable for industry.
