Abstract

The results of a geochemical study of ultrabasic rocks from Ituango (Antioquia), the northern region of the Central Cordillera, are presented in this paper.

Fifty-one samples of pan concentrates were analyzed spectrographically to measure the Cr, Ni, and Co contents in them. These trace elements show a direct relationship with the lithological units of the area and serve for the geochemical delineation and characterization of the ultramafic and metamorphic rocks in the study area.

It was possible to determine an increase in the Cr content in the ultramafic body, in a trend that varies from south to north, being the average value of 15 100 ppm; the values of this same element in the area where metamorphic rocks of the Valdivia Group outcrop are 3745 ppm. For Co and Ni, the distribution is very homogeneous in the two lithological units.

Three high Cr values (50 000 ppm) were found in the center of the ultramafic body; these values are related to a zone of intense fracturing and serpentinization and possibly indicate an anomalous area for this element, which needs to be further investigated.
