Abstract
This manual aims to offer the fundamental bases of Optical Mineralogy in a simplified and concise form, which facilitates the understanding and application of the behavior of polarized light in the identification of anisotropic minerals.
The information included is the result of a compilation, excerpted and translated from the known works of Kerr, P. (1959), Bloss, F. (1970), Phillips, W. (1971), and Shelly, D. (1975), and partly from personal notes of the author. Phillips, W. (1971) and Shelly, D. (1975), and partly from the author's personal notes. The illustrations in several cases have been faithfully reproduced from the works mentioned above, and in others, have been modified, supplemented, or devised by the author.
In some chapters, the detailed discussions in the Optical Mineralogy texts are treated briefly. Therefore, it is assumed that the interested party should know the basic principles when using the manual.
