Abstract
The present paper discusses the existing systems of systematic nomenclature for fossil pollen and spores. An attempt is made to demonstrate the drawbacks of some of them and some parts of others. Finally, the paper proposes a new system which may be consistent and generally acceptable. Such a system is purely artificial, generic names based on the names of pollen and spore types with the term -ites and -letes (Tricolpites, Monoletes, etc.). Subgenera, which will only be used in the case of large genera, can be formed based on the sculpture types (Retitricolpites, Psilatricolpites, etc.).
Figure 1 shows the fossil pollen genera, Figure 2 the fossil spore genera, and Figure 3 the subgenera for Tricolpites.
