Abstract

Modern clay research is based on the study of the molecular network. X-rays, thermos differential tests, and electron microscopic examinations are used in these studies. Different procedures are carried out for research, microscopic investigation, complete chemical analysis, crushing samples for current mineralogical studies and optically- oriented preparations, sieving, determination of loss on ignition, preparation of test bodies, and the study of ion exchangeability, plasticity tests. Finally, a description is given of the processes carried out and the availability of artifacts to perform them.

The types of clays that were examined were: clay slates and hard clays, Amagá, soft white clays, Tejares clays, El Guayabal, plastic clays, Las Ovejas, decomposed rocks such as Diorites, Andesites, and Filitas. They are mainly used for earthenware, pottery, construction bricks, and others.
