Abstract
This report, Geology of the F-8 quadrangle, Planeta Rica (scale 1: 100 000), contributes to the geological knowledge and systematic mapping of northwestern Colombia. Seven stratigraphic units are described with ages ranging from the Upper Cretaceous to the Quaternary and two of basic igneous origin whose ages predate the Upper Cretaceous.
From a morphological and structural point of view, two main units are present in the area, the San Jorge Basin and the Serranía (anticlinorium) of San Jerónimo. The units related to the Serranía de San Jerónimo (oceanic basement) are generally folded, while the units related to the San Jorge Basin (continental basement) are little disturbed.
Rapid facial changes, mainly in a south-north direction, are common in strata of both marine and continental origin.
The area is characterized by compressional tectonics. Two structural directions are observed in the area, NNE-SSW and NW-SE. The NNE-SSW direction is predominant, with tight structures and with thrust faults of little displacement where the eastern block is the ascending one. The NNE-SSW direction is characterized by lineaments and horizontal or strike-slip faults that cut the structures of the NNE-SSW system. The area’s tectonics are closely linked to the interactions of the Cocos-Caribbean (oceanic crust) and northern South American (continental crust) plates during the pre-Andean and Andean orogeny.
Several gas- producing fields occur in the eastern part of the quadrangle. However, o il prospects have so far been negative despite intensified exploration in recent years. The coals of the Ciénaga de Oro Formation are currently the subject of a thorough study to define their economic character.
The low grade and low reserves of the nickel-bearing laterite deposit southwest of Planeta Rica rule it out as an economic project. Instead, the limestones from the Carreta, Cantagallo, and Loma Azul quarries have been exploited mainly as road aggregate.
