Abstract

An analysis of the phenomena related to stereoscopic vision is made, which concludes that stereoscopic vision is based on physiological processes. A clear distinction must be made between the natural stereoscopic vision of everyday life and artificial observation conditions as, for example, under a stereoscope. In the former case, certain physiological factors are in complete harmony, whereas in unnatural vision cases, conflicting tendencies appear. The relative strengths of various disharmonious factors determine the site of the observed stereomodel. Stereoscopic vision with parallel or divergent visual axes can, in this way, be explained on a physiological basis. A simple assumption enables us to extend the projection theory to such cases and to reconstruct the observed stereomodel geometrically. All the properties of this stereomodel, such as horizontal scale, vertical scale, and vertical exaggeration, can then be determined for all cases of stereoscopic vision with or without lenses that the photo-interpreter encounters under normal circumstances.
