Abstract
Water, considered one of the essential constituents of life in its three great manifestations, animal, vegetable, and mineral, has played throughout all ages a definitive role in the physical and biological evolution that has taken place on the face of the earth. Therefore, it is of great interest to develop the inorganic and organic aspects and their application to human activities.
It is a powerful vehicle for the transformation of matter and energy. Geological history itself abounds in examples where water has played creative or destructive roles; whimsical forms of the earth's crust, natural wonders carved out in connection with the movements of the crust itself, by ancient seas that advanced towards the continents and then receded, leaving their sediments behind. Processes of extraordinary geochemical complexity, analysis, and synthesis, composition and decomposition, integration, and disintegration are phenomena in which water played a preponderant role.
