Abstract
This article presents the country’s mineral wealth and mining development and its importance in the industry and the economy. It also makes a comparison of the volume of mineral production between Colombia and other Latin American countries.
The report emphasizes the country’s population density with percentage projections of population increase in the following years and points out the energy development and the importance of minerals for producing the energy required to supply the largest population. The author considers that Colombia has been a recognized country in Latin America for mineral production, and the objective is to continue to belong to this ranking.
The report describes the fuel minerals, metallic minerals, and salts, non-metallic minerals, and other minerals. It presents the production of petroleum and its derivatives, coal, metallic minerals such as iron and steel, salt, sulfur, mercury, gold, silver, platinum, nickel, titanium, among others, during several years of exploitation. Finally, the report presents the projection of available reserves and indicates that further exploration and exploitation will be required to reach the necessary quantities to meet the objectives.
