Abstract
This report gives an account of the work carried out by the geological commission sent by the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum in collaboration with the Institute of Industrial Development to study the possibilities of phosphate deposits in the archipelago of San Andres and Providencia.
The lithology of each of the studied islands is described, as well as their stratigraphy. On San Andres Island, there are strata from the middle to upper Miocene; Providencia Island is composed of igneous rocks, possibly from the Tertiary; and the outcrops of the Serrana Bank are from the Quaternary.
The studies carried out in the Southwest Key of the Serrana Bank are detailed, where loose sands with phosphate impregnations were found, some economic considerations are made, and the report concludes by advising not to undertake exploitation due to the results of the analysis that gave a percentage of P2O5 between 7.82% and 0%.
