Abstract

In the department of Meta, the geology of part of the eastern foothills of the Eastern Cordillera west of San Martin is briefly described.

The rocks of greatest interest in the studied area are a metasedimentary sequence, probably of Paleozoic age, and sedimentary rocks of Miocene age. The predominant rocks in the first sequence are, in order: rocks of detrital origin with quartz and calcite in various proportions and with schistose texture, sericitic-graphitic schists, an amphibolite of the para-amphibolite level, limestones, and metamorphic dolomitic limestones. This sequence underwent moderate regional metamorphism, later cataclastic effects, and mineral input from an igneous injection. The Tertiary sediments are in contact with the metasedimentary sequence by thrust faulting.

The deposit of limestone and dolomitic limestone, high in calcium and magnesium, present in the area, is suitable for the metallurgical industry, as well as to a good degree for soil correction. The calculated reserves for these deposits amount to 400 million tons.
