Abstract

The value of mining production in 1956 was 550 million pesos; of this, 250 million pesos corresponded to petroleum and 300 million pesos to other minerals. The value of minerals and metals exported in 1956 was over 230 million pesos, equivalent to 16.6% of total exports. Thus, there are good prospects for increasing the volume of mineral exports.

Geological studies and mining activity have devalued the pessimistic concept that Colombia has only "samples" of minerals and have proven that there are indeed deposits of commercial value. With new exploration and exploitation works carried out by interested people with initiative, sources of income will open since there are good prospects for developing new mineral resources. To develop this work, it is necessary to reform and regulate the existing mining legislation.

The appreciable development of mining in Colombia, mainly concerning industrial minerals, is based on the numerous studies made in Economic Geology.

The National Geological Survey has provided valuable services in this development. Evidence of its effectiveness is numerous geological plans and 1250 reports available in the Service's library. Some of these have been published in some Colombian geological and mining journals. These studies have been carried out with very limited resources. However, with an increased budget, the Service can commit itself to much more intensive and effective work for the benefit of the national economy.
