Proposed classification of Colombian coals

Abstract
The idea of adopting a classification system for Colombian coals according to the new technological trends of analysis, utilization, and marketing of coals, replacing the "International Classification of Hard Coals by Type," currently in use in Colombia, is presented here. It is estimated that the proposed system can be applied internationally.
The proposed classification scheme is based on several parameters easily determined in the laboratory and are routine and research procedures in the coal industry of technologically advanced countries.
Microscopic techniques determine two of these parameters and define the rank (by vitrinite reflectance) and type (by vitrinite and exinite contents) of the coals. Three other parameters: volatile matter, dilatometry, calorific value, qualify the different ranges of coals. These parameters are represented by a four-digit code number, which places the coals within a scientific and technological framework of practical application.
This proposal attempts to respond to several, if not all, of the criticisms made of the International Classification, following valuable suggestions given by prestigious experts in the field, such as Alpern VanKrevelen, Teichmuller, and others.
