Abstract

This report synthesizes the results of geological, geoelectric, and hydrochemical investigations, water source inventories, stable isotope analysis, exploratory drilling, and aquifer tests carried out in the Northeastern Flank of the Serranía de San Jacinto and the Littoral Zone of the Gulf of Morrosquillo.

The study area is morphologically divided into the Coastal, Mountainous, Hills of Plains and Alluvial zones, formed by Cretaceous sedimentary rocks belonging to the Cansona Group, by Tertiary sedimentary rocks of marine origin belonging to the Carmen Group, and by rocks and sediments of transitional and continental character, belonging to the Sincelejo Group.

In the whole area, 1313 SEV were performed and interpreted, 255 in the Littoral Zone of the Gulf of Morrosquillo and 1058 in the Eastern Flank of the Serranía de San Jacinto. Once the preliminary interpretation of the SEVs was made, the exploratory wells were drilled, deducing from their physical logs the geoelectric model was applied to the SEVs by adjusting them using a computer.

In the Littoral Zone of the Gulf of Morrosquillo, 6 study wells were located and drilled in the localities of Coveñas, Puerto Viejo, Berruga, and San Onofre with a depth between 80 and 150m. In the northeastern flank of the San Jacinto Serranía range, 25 exploratory wells were drilled in the towns of Sahagun, Chinú, Las Llanadas, Chapineros, Sincelejo, Corozal, Betulia, Sucre, Since, San Pedro, Buenavista, Rovira, and Galeras with depths between 60 and 300m. In addition, 12 production wells were built to supply some populations.

According to their lithology, Cretaceous and tertiary formations of marine origin have low permeability, storing water of poor chemical quality due to the high content of total dissolved solids. Tertiary formations of transitional and continental origin present better permeability conditions due to their medium to coarse granulometry, containing water of better chemical quality. The recent formations of fluvio-Iacustrine origin the alluvial sediments of the Morrosquillo Gulf Littoral, store water whose chemical quality is affected, in the Littoral Zone, by the marine intrusion, and in other zones by the seasonal variations of dry and humid periods, where the evaporation processes concentrate a great number of solids that are leached by sporadic rains, and the water coming from these aquifers is not very fresh.
