Study of the industrial clays of the central zone of Antioquia

Abstract
The present study on the reserves of clays of industrial interest, located in the central zone of the department of Antioquia, is the result of an investigation agreed between the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and the National University (Faculty of Mines of Medellin).
The determining factors in the formation, transport, and deposition of clays (weathering, tectonism, drainage, climate) are extensively discussed. A geological sketch of the area precedes the detailed description of the most important clay deposits, indicating each analyzed sample’s physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics. Clays are used industrially as construction material or in ceramics, especially in Medellín, the center of consumption.
At the end of this study, there is a summary of the research results of the research on clays carried out in the laboratories of the same Faculty of Mines.
