Abstract

The region of this study is located at the south- central end of the Santander Massif, Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. In a sequence of Lower Cretaceous sediments and in a position concordant with the direction of the strata, there is a 2.4 m thick horizon containing Pb and Zn minerals, mainly galena and sphalerite. Sulfides occur as lenses, veins, and dissemination in layers of sandstones, mudstones, and dolomitized limestone. The gangue material is represented by calcite, quartz, dolomite, and pyrite.

In an area of 2.5 km long and 500 m wide, a strip- oriented NNW-SSE is delimited, in which three zones with anomalous values are recognized, mainly in Pb, Zn, V, and Mn, in addition to relatively high values in Fe and F.

The Montenegro mineralization and the zones with geochemical and geophysical anomalies are located within 300 m of the Cretaceous sequence. Some of the geological features recognized in the Montenegro area correspond to those described in Mississippi Valley type base metal deposits.
